20 Fenchurch Street, London

In February 2019, office interiors specialist; Kinetic Workplace Ltd began planning the redesign of a large office area at 20 Fenchurch Street, London.  Known in the area as ‘The Walkie-Talkie’ due to its distinctive shape, the 38-storey building is the fifth tallest completed building in the City of London. It provides 690,000 square footage of office space and is occupied by some of the world’s leading-edge businesses.

Due to noise issues coming from a busy office breakout café on one of the top levels of the building, Kinetic Workplace Ltd were instructed to find a solution to the acoustical problems.  After research from an independent acoustic consultant Kinetic Workplace specified a combination of products to solve the problem, engaging iFlor Flooring Contractors for assistance in the installation of the flooring.

The solution put forward was firstly “GenieMat RST05” a recycled rubber base soundproofing floor system to be laid directly onto the raised floor tiles. For the next stage Kinetic Workplace via iFlor approached us at Easylay Systems Ltd for information on our Floorfixx range of subfloor preparation systems.

Kinetic Workplace Ltd & iFlor chose our Floorfixx ‘Smart’ system which was installed in an area of 310m2, fitted over the GenieMat.  The ‘Smart’ system is installed using a self-adhesive overlap joint method, floating, fast, and easy to install.  The boards are 8mm in thickness comprised of 2 layers of 3mm MDF, with 2.2mm of XPS foam sandwiched in-between.  Floorfixx smart has a 1.33 tog rating and provides impact sound reduction of 23db, perfect for this job specification.

To finish Kinetic Workplace specified & iFlor installed a combination of Tarkett ID Inspiration Vinyl Tiles and Desso Rock Carpet Tiles.  In total the floor was raised approximately 19/20mm which meant several doors and plinths in the kitchen area required adjustment but working hard over several weekends to accommodate working outside of the office working hours, Kinetic Workplace & iFlor  completed a very impressive project. Vince Taylor, Managing Director of Kinetic Workplace Ltd and Adam Couch of  iFlor Commercial Flooring were certainly pleased with the results not to mention the client and its neighbours.
